Near-rhyme in the Qur'ān patterns voiced and emphatic obstruents together as against voiceless obstruents. Since voiced and glottalized consonants are articulatorily similar, this is an argument in favour of a glottalized pronunciation of the emphatics in earlier Arabic. Arabic is therefore another language to provide support to the reconstruction of the emphatic consonants of Proto-Semitic as ejectives. An explanation is also suggested as to how the contemporary pronunciation of Arabic emphatics came into use.
