Summary

The rivers Euphrates and Tigris played an important role in the life of the people in ancient Mesopotamia. Due to insufficient precipitation, people depended on their waters for farming. They also used them as a means of transportation. Furthermore, the sprinkling of their waters in rituals was supposed to purify the room or a sick person. Kings made the claim to rule over the banks of the rivers part of their propaganda. The analysis of the earliest literary texts from Mesopotamia as well as royal inscriptions and incantations can give insight into the way people thought and felt about their rivers and how they influenced their life.
