Summary

The derogatory term cheragh-koshi was first used in the early Safavid period to denote heterodox groups such as Ismailis. Later the term was used by Sunnis and Shiites to slander heterodox groups as far apart as the Balkans and N.W. Pakistan. The use of the term seems to have discontinued after the nineteenth century.
