The earliest published contemporary account that mentions and discusses Shah Esmaʿil I, the founder of the Safavid dynasty, his family, his rise to power, his plans and the governance of his kingdom as well as his Qezelbash followers was a broadsheet published in German in Mainz in July 1502. This article offers a translation, a transcription and an analysis of this broadsheet, which sheds light on the role that the Sophy played in European anti-Ottoman politics.
