The present paper investigates the west wall of the synagogue of Dura-Europos. Although it does not support the view that an overall, unified artistic and/or theological program can be identified on the murals of the synagogue, the important western wall provides, nevertheless, several smaller cycles, which communicate consistent program(s). The message of the west wall has both religious and political aspects, and is intended for the necessities of a Jewish Diaspora community, living in turbulent times.
