This article discusses samples of the alleged more-than-five-hundred lion designations in Arabic from a contextual and comparative etymological viewpoint. An analysis of the sources in which these designations occur (early Arabic poetry and onomastics) suggests that while a few of them could be of Ancient Arabian and Ethiosemitic origin, the majority are originally epithets that refer to physical attributes. Some of these epithets could have emerged as ‘taboo names’ due to either a fear from mentioning the true name(s) of the lion or a religious attitude, as the animal was associated with divinity in the Arabic tradition.
