This article responds to a recent attempt by Eli Franco, following the example of Jakob Stuchlik, to discredit Erich Frauwallner as an anti-Semite, whose account of the historical development of Indian philosophy was based on racist ideology. It exposes Franco’s method of compensating for the lack of evidence by distorting the sources and placing them in an altered context of meaning through self-devised implications: documents in Frauwallner’s personnel file that contradict Stuchlik’s and Franco’s allegations are not cited. The evidence presented here is drawn from Frauwallner’s personal files and the legal gazettes of the time. It provides reliable information about the facts behind their accusations.
