Zu einer kaum bekannten Übersetzung des Kirātārjunīya durch Friedrich Rückert}, journal = {Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft}, volume = {161}, number = {2}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Summary:The article attempts to draw attention to a nearly forgotten translation of Bhāravi's famous Mahākāvya Kirātārjunīya by the well-known German orientalist and poet Friedrich Rückert. Already in the 1830ies, when Indian studies where still in its infancy, Rückert studied the difficult poem together with Mallinātha's commentary and translated the whole text. His translation predates the first and till this day one and only complete translation published, namely Carl Cappeller's German prose rendering (1912), by 80 years. But, since it never had been published Rückert's rendering remained largely unknown. Rückert's manuscript which is kept in the “Staatsbibliothek” (Berlin) contains the Sanskrit text, transcribed from the editio princeps of the Kirātārjunīya (Calcutta 1814) together with numerous excerpts from the commentary, as well as the translation in prose together with stray remarks. Circumstances and time of Rückert's studies on the Kirātārjunīya can be fairly precise reconstructed thanks to his correspondence with Franz Bopp, wich is described in the first part of the article. In the second part one specimen of the translation according to the Berlin manuscript is presented. It covers the description of Apsarases sporting in a river (Kirātārjunīya 8.27–57) — the same episode which Rückert himself has published in metrical form in 1831. A comparison of these two versions — now for the first time possible — offers interesting insights in Rückert's translation techniques as well as in his struggle for finding adequate words in a time when just a handful of German translations from the Sanskrit existed.}, url = {https://doi.org/10.13173/zeitdeutmorggese.161.2.0377} doi = {10.13173/zeitdeutmorggese.161.2.0377} }
