Summary

The present article investigates nominal agreement features such as gender and number in Semitic based on a typological perspective and proposes a derivation of the attested agreement systems from an original situation in which gender and number were only indicated on pronouns and basic animate lexemes. It further proposes a new explanation for the phenomenon of chiastic concord in cardinal numbers based on a derivational understanding of the morpheme -(a)t. The article is divided into two parts: part I presents a general discussion of agreement and the basic data from Semitic. Part II provides an analysis of the data and a reconstruction of the development that underlies the rise of gender, number, and agreement in Semitic.
