In this paper a new interpretation of the Old Tibetan lexeme ring is put forward based on textual evidence that has not been included in any study heretofore. The new reading is supported by an analysis of Old Tibetan compounds in which the lexeme occurs, as well as by a thorough discussion of the postposition ring la and its origin. It is argued that the latter is not a sufficient means to date the so-called Central Tibetan inscriptions but that other linguistic features have to be taken into consideration instead.
