This paper discusses the inscription from a censer retrieved from الجية (al-Ǧiyya, Jiyeh) in Lebanon, now in the British Museum (museum number 1903,0624.3). The inscription is apparently the first attestation of the presumed ancient name of Jiyeh found on site, here also accompanied with a designation of the settlement’s status as κώμη or “village.” A new reading of the name of the patron saint of the church who once owned the censer is also offered: Isaiah instead of Elijah.
