The Calendar Origin Hypothesis of overcounting in Old Turkic proposes that Old Turkic has been initially an undercounting language and its overcounting system was formed due to the influence of the Chinese civil calendar system. This paper challenges the theoretical assumption and empirical evidence of this hypothesis and argues that overcounting was an earlier inherent characteristic of the Turkic numeral system, reflecting a different counting logic of number development. We provide cross-linguistic data to support the new hypothesis, which the Calendar Origin Hypothesis fails to account for.
