2 This term qishr is another case of metaphysical (in this case Neoplatonic) concepts being deployed in an exegetical context. The word makes an early appearance in Arabic philosophical literature in the works of the Kindī circle, notably the Arabic Plotinus which was a major influence on Ṣadrā and other Safavid thinkers. 3 Ṣadrā notes that since the speaker of the Quran is of course God, the passages of praise we find in it are cases of God praising Himself (pp. 66–67).
