1 The name Uighur suffers from varying spellings (including Uigur, Uygur, and Uyghur) and is often prefixed with the adjective ‘New’ or ‘Modern’ in order to distinguish it from the extinct (Old) Uighur language. The spelling with -gh- is unusual in German. This letter combination (as in Afghanistan) denotes a voiced fricative that occurs neither in standard English nor in standard German, and is in these languages pronounced as if it were -g-. The spelling ‘Ujgur’ would reflect the current German pronunciation, but this is not generally used.
