Summary: Prayer, in its various forms, is a very important part of the religiosity and spirituality of Twelver Shi’ism. The corpus of prayer books, the oldest of which date back to the first centuries of Islam and the most recent to the present day, is monumental. Among these prayers, those dedicated to pilgrimages to the tombs of Imams and called ziyāra, plural ziyārāt, are particularly prized by the faithful. Some of them are composed for “spiritual pilgrimages” and can therefore be recited during what can be called a mental journey to the graves of the Imams. Perhaps the most famous of these spiritual pilgrimage prayers is al-ziyāra al-jāmiʿa, of high esoteric and mystical content and very frequently commented on by Shi’i scholars of all times. It is attributed to the tenth Imam of the Twelvers, ʿAlī al-Ḥādī (d. 254/868) and reported by the famous Ibn Bābūya al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq (d. 381/991-992). This prayer is presented here, translated into French and briefly annotated.
